Museum Kampa – Sova’s Mills

The gallery of the Jan and Meda Mládek Foundation was opened in 2003. It has in its care several important modern Czech and European art collections, which were donated by Mrs. Meda Mládek after the death of her husband. Gallery’s collections include two icons of Czech cubistic artists of the 20th century: painter František Kupka and sculptor Otto Gutfreund. The museum also organizes variety of temporary expositions of modern artists such as Yoko Ono, Andy Warhol, Theodor Pištěk and Piet Mondrian.
The museum seats in a unique building of Sova’s Mills, which was reconstructed in 2001. The reconstruction was complicated due to the location of the building in a floodplain near Čertovka channel. Magistrát hlavního města Prahy was the main investor of the reconstruction project, the first opening of the reconstructed Sova’s Mills was on 26th September 2001.

What to see

The most valuable and spectacular collection of the museum is the extensive collection of František Kupka’s paintings. It comprises his early drawings, book illustrations and abstract watercolor and oil paintings. What also shouldn’t be missed is the exposition downstairs of Sova’s Mills, it’s an exposition of Czech modern art pioneers of communist era. Artworks from artists like Otakar Slavík or Jiří Načeradský can be found there.

Basic info

Museum Kampa lies on left bank of Vltava River and can be approached from a park on Kampa island on Lesser Town. The museum is open daily from 10 am to 6 pm. The entrance fee is 180 CZK, students and pensioners pay half the price.
